Bharat is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language action drama film written and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. It is jointly produced by Atul Agnihotri, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Nikhil Namit and Salman Khan under the banners Reel Life Productions, Salman Khan Films and T-Series.
Based on the 2014 South Korean film Ode to My Father, principal photography for Bharatbegan in April 2018. Shooting took place at such locations as Abu Dhabi, Spain, Malta, Punjab and Delhi. Kaif joined the cast soon after Priyanka Chopra opted out of the role after filming commenced, for her impending engagement to Nick Jonas. Filming concluded in March 2019. The film's soundtrack was composed by Vishal-Shekhar, with lyrics written by Irshad Kamil, and released under the banner T-Series.
Bharat was theatrically released in India on 5 June 2019, on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. It received mixed reviews from critics, with praise directed to Kaif's performance, while the pace, Zafar's adaptation and screenplay received criticism. The film earned Rs 42.30 crore on its first day, becoming Khan's biggest opening day release.
Bharat's life over a period of 52 years, from 18 to 70 years of age, traces India's post-independence history.
During the Partition of India in 1947, all Hindus living in present-day Pakistan were forcefully transferred to India. Many people were killed during this period. Gautam Kumar and his family board a train to India in order to save his family from the implications. Bharat accidentally leaves Guddiya while climbing up the train. Bharat's father stays behind to search for her, telling his son to take the boy's mother and two younger siblings to their Ration Store, where Bharat's aunt runs an imported goods store. Before leaving Bharat and the rest of his family, the father makes Bharat promise to be the head of the household in his place.
Bharat meets Vilayati Khan who also got separated from his parents. They both become friends.
They see a street circus , in which a girl performing stunts ,Radha gets the attention of Vilayati. Bharat and Vilayati both decide to join the circus which later become the world's most famous circus which Vilayati as the anchor and Bharat as the stuntman , who likes Radha and Radha likes him too. During a bike show Bharat wins against another stuntman. Three boys try to mimic Bharat in which one falls down and gets a bad hurt. Bharat gets tensed and leaves the circus with Vilayati due to the fear of getting injured and not being able to complete his father's promise.
As the firstborn, Bharat become their family's breadwinner from an early age, doing all manner of odd jobs to support the family.Bharat joins The Great Russian Circusin 1964 and earns a reputation for being a playboy.[8]The discovery of oil in the Gulf region in the mid-1970s leads to a subsequent Indian migration to the territory; here, Bharat begins a romantic relationship with his chief engineer Kumud Raina. After a mining accident, Bharat leaves Saudi Arabia because his visa expires. Kumud returns to India for Bharat's sister's marriage. Kumud come to Bharat's house to express their love in front of Bharat's mother , while Bharat get a little nervous though he says he too loves Kumud. Bharat's mother agrees on Bharat's wish that they can live without marrying each other. Which shocked them both
A few years pass, and Bharat's aunt dies. Bharat's uncle, now elderly and in need of money, decides to sell the Ration Hind store, a moved Bharat disagrees with the decision. Bharat and Vilayati then decide to take another job as a sailor to transport goods. Their they meet with a problem that they and everybody couldn't understand the language of their Naval Officer. As the officer speaks fast because of a disease in which his mouth works 3 times faster than his brain. But Bharat solves the problem. When the officer speak they tell him that He is Senior so he should speak. And the officer happily agrees, every crew member then uses the same trick. Over there Bharat meets the officer's daughter who resembles his sister Gudiya , in their free time they would play with her. Once they reach a port and Vilayati and a local lady Sussane fall in love with each other. On their last sail day the ship is attacked by some African Sea Pirates. They capture the Officer and his family and some sailors. Bharat hides but comes out to save them because the officer's daughter reminds him of his young sister 'Gudiya'. Bharat speaks with the leader of the African lottery. He says African-Indian brothers, they both are blacks but the Leader still doesn't satisfy. Bharat tells they are fan of Michael Jackson mistaking him as a African. Then he says they are fan of Pelé mistakening him as African. Then the leader says these people are American and Brazilian. Now, Bharat says that Nelson Mandela- Mahatma Gandhi friends then the Leader agrees but says if they give him money the will not kill them. Vilayati first hesitates to give the money but then Bharat forces his and Vilayati gives them their salary. Still Leader doesn't agree to leave the ship and tells them that they are fans of Amitabh Bachchan and asks them to dance on Amitabh Bachchan's songs. All the people become happy and dance with them and happily gives back their Money. The sailors give them half of their Ration of the ship. Bharat, Vilayati and Suzzane return to India.
Vilayati was happy as he was the first in his family to marry a foreigner. Bharat runs the store with his love, and life goes on happily. Kumud is chosen as a creative director of Zee TV. Zee TV runs TV programs produced by Kumud, in which relatives separated during the chaos of the Partition are reunited. Bharat is contacted to be featured in one of these shows due to the hope of an elderly man from his hometown who claims to be his father. On TV, the two realize they are from the same hometown , but they are not father and son. Bharat's family is distraught over the mistake, but soon afterward, the same program brings Bharat back to TV in the hope of finding his long-lost sister, 'Gudiya'. A woman(Tabu) was adopted as a child by an American family during the Partition is featured on the show. Bharat converses with her through the broadcast, and realizes she is indeed Gudiya. An emotional reunion ensues, when his sister returns to India. Bharat's mother passes away soon after the reunion.
In the present day, an elderly Bharat finally decides to sell his aunt's imported goods store, due to the forcing of the people of the locality which up to this point he stubbornly refused to do despite the store's losing money. In a flashback to the Partition. Bharat's father promises to reunite with the rest of the family at the store, thus explaining why Bharat bought and held on to the store so long. In the final scene, Bharat and Kumud marry. Bharat tells that it's time to sell the store, wistfully remarking that his father is probably too old at this point to be still alive and reunite with him there. He meets his father's spirit and he says that Bharat's promise is completed now he shall not wait for his father anymore , he too states that he could have left Gudiya at the station and saved his own life but then he would die from inside so instead he saved Gudiya by sacrificing his own life.
